It investigates a relational approach, framing her as a conversation partner we can listen to, engage with, and get to know. The project uses immersive technologies to explore alternative ways of relating to natural environments, integrating landscape architecture, spatial narratives, and research-based fieldwork. Structured as a rite of passage across physical and virtual space, participants encounter the North Sea through a 15-minute interactive VR experience. This experience does not aim to replicate or replace nature; rather, it acts as a lens, filtering the environment through technology and highlighting specific qualities. The North Sea is not depicted, but encountered as a living being. Rather than representing a specific site, Matrix approaches her as an interconnected ecosystem, unfolding through a sequence of landscapes, from dunes and forest to tidal zones and submerged environments. The virtual environment is structured around bodily interaction, allowing participants to navigate through movement and balance. Soft and intentionally ambiguous shapes and textures invite interpretation rather than representation, shifting attention toward sound, touch, and embodied perception as alternative modes of engagement. Emerging within the context of sea level rise in the Netherlands, Matrix reflects on the cultural and existential implications of living with water. It frames the climate crisis not as a technical problem to be solved, but as a condition that exposes the separation between the human and the nonhuman world, calling for a shift in how we perceive and inhabit our environment. Through immersive and sensory experience, the project explores how states of playfulness and curiosity can cultivate a sense of belonging with the North Sea, positioning this as a necessary condition A spatial interpretation of Timothy Morton “All Art is Ecological”. This project is a spatial interpretation of a deep philosophical engagement with ecology, debated by Timothy Morton in his book „All Art is Ecological“. This intervention explores how architecture can make us [humans] aware of our entanglement and symbiosis with our environment. With the beginning of agriculture and settlement we entered a cycle of self-maintenance, progress and exploitation. We slowly forgot about our symbiotic state and drew a distinction between the human and the non-human. The prospect of this cycle leading to global warming, leading to mass extinction had my thoughts enter a rabbit-hole labled „This planet would be a better place without us!“ And this might be true, if we had never stepped a foot on this earth. But we are included in the environment as one species among others. We have become entangled with the earth systems in a way that does not allow us to just get out. If we destroy our habitat and go extinct, numerous lifeforms are about to die out as well. A Supplement to Joris-Karl Huysmans „A Rebours“. This is a story, based on the novel “A Rebours” by Joris-Karl Huysmans, that analyses the protagonists‘ character and translates it into architecture. „Kopfgeburt“ focuses entirely on his wish for isolation from society and reality and functions as a supplement to “A Rebours”. The architectural design is, besides texts and illustrations, just one part of the whole story. In „Kopfgeburt“, Jean des Esseintes, Huysman‘s protagonist, seeks the greatest possible abstraction from reality in the closed inner world of the shelter he creates for himself. He turns away from reality through the medium of books. This cosmos of hundreds of worlds, of hundreds of images of reality, becomes his imaginary cabinet of curiosities. Jean des Esseintes feels so repelled by the surrounding reality that he withdraws completely from it. He abstracts himself down to the smallest detail and creates his own artificial paradise on his search for refuge.
